Abstract

Scientific literacy is both a right and an instrument of transformation of people, which can help us understand how science, technology, and society interconnect. One challenge in this area is its assessment, requiring reliable, adapted instruments with a robust theoretical basis. Many of the questionnaires created for this purpose were designed decades ago and may not adequately address emerging 21st-century issues such as sustainability, global technological advances, and climate change. The Global Scientific Literacy Questionnaire (GSLQ) emerges as a contemporary, multidimensional instrument for assessing aspects of scientific literacy. Given its potential and the lack of a validated version in Portuguese, this article describes its cross-cultural adaptation and verification of evidence of validity for Brazil. The process followed psychometric criteria, including translation, synthesis, evaluation by experts and target audience, pilot testing, and analysis of the internal structure. For validation, the Content Validity Coefficient and Exploratory Factor Analysis were used. As a result, a Portuguese version of the GSLQ was obtained, suitable for application in Basic Education and Higher Education.
