The use of animals in research is a controversial and crucial topic in the biomedical field, which implies examining how the practice is viewed by specific segments of the public. To conduct a verifying action, this study analyzes the social representations of third-year students from the integrated technical high school in Environmental Science and Computer Science from a federal public institution regarding animal experimentation. It is part of a doctoral research project that utilized focus groups and workshops. Employing the Theory of Social Representations and the Free Word Association Test, the qualitative-quantitative research involved 36 students. The results showed that the Central Core of the Social Representations of Environmental Science students included technical terms such as “test” and “research,” while those in Computer Science evoked words with a negative view, such as “cruelty” and “unfair.” The research highlights the need to find strategies to bridge science and society, promoting a critical reflection on animal experimentation.
