The purpose of this paper is to present the results of a theoretical study about the approach to environmental education for indigenous communities in Latin America; it forms part of a master’s thesis entitled: “Intercultural Dialogue Between the U’wa Indigenous Knowledge System and Environmental Education with in-service Indigenous Educators.” The methodology employed consisted of a literature review of scientific databases and repositories, which enabled a general mapping of the documents and an analysis of the frequency of academic output on the topic. Based on this information, thematic categories were generated for analysis, revealing a tendency toward a humanistic approach to the purpose of environmental education and a notable absence of perspectives on dialogue in the research. On the other hand, although most studies link ethno-educational processes in their research, they do not yet encourage the participation of ethno-educators in those processes. Finally, a theoretical trend was observed that highlights the intrinsic connection between communities and nature, which can enhance environmental education as a catalyst for dialogue in processes that link communities’ indigenous knowledge with the scientific knowledge of education.References
