Abstract

A pilot study was conducted with the objective of investigating at what level of mental representation students and physicists operate regarding the concept of electromagnetic field when they solve problems and theoretical questions. Our theoretical basicas lies in JohnsonLaird's theory of mental representations according to which there are at least three major kinds of such representations: mental models, propositions and images. Physicists and physics students were interwiewed concerning how they use the concept of eletromagnetic field when they do physics. Preliminary findings are reported in this paper.
